Obtaining an Apostille for International Use as a Foreigner in Bali, Indonesia

An Apostille is a certificate used to legalize documents, verifying their authenticity for use outside of Indonesia. The purpose of an Apostille is to ensure that documents can be used on an international scale.

Typically, Apostilles are required for documents such as educational certificates, health records, police clearance certificates (SKCK), birth certificates, and many others when they need to be used abroad. This certification is necessary for these documents to be recognized internationally.

Indonesia ratified the Apostille Convention of October 5, 1961, on October 5, 2021, through Presidential Regulation No. 2 of 2021 concerning the Ratification of the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents.

In brief, the Apostille service can be understood as the authentication of an official’s signature, stamp, and/or official seal on public documents by matching them with specimens through a single authority.

In this case, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) of the Republic of Indonesia serves as the competent authority.

This legalization involves the authentication of the official’s signature on the document, which is carried out by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia.

After authentication, an Apostille certificate will be issued by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, indicating that the document is valid and has been legalized.

In this blog, we will discuss how to obtain an Apostille for public documents so they can be recognized internationally in other countries such as Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
