Living in Bali for an extended period offers an exciting lifestyle, and a significant aspect of this involves owning a personal vehicle. 

In fact, 80% of foreigners who stay in Bali for more than a month choose to rent motorcycles. 

Some foreigners who hold KITAS/KITAP don’t know that they need to pay the motorcycle or car tax if they own or buy a motorbike or car. Sometimes because the motorcycles are not registered in their names. 

They usually plan to sell them later, only paying taxes if absolutely necessary. Most of these expatriates prefer to purchase second-hand motorcycles that are between 1 to 5 years old, finding them more affordable and convenient for navigating the island.

What is Motorcycle or Car Tax, STNK, and BPKB

Motorcycle Tax is an annual tax levied on motorcycle owners in Indonesia, which contributes to local government revenue and the maintenance of public infrastructure. The tax rate varies depending on the type of motorcycle and its specifications.

STNK (Surat Tanda Nomor Kendaraan) or Vehicle Registration Certificate is the official document that proves the registration and legality of a vehicle under the owner’s name in Indonesia. It includes critical information such as the vehicle’s license number, owner’s identity, and vehicle specifications.

How to Pay Motorbike or Car Tax in Bali

Paying your motorcycle or Car tax in Bali can be done through several channels:

  • Directly at the Samsat Office: You can visit your nearest Samsat (Sistem Administrasi Manunggal Satu Atap) office to pay the tax in person. 

This Samsat Office is open from monday to saturday. Monday to Thursday 08.00 – 14.00 and Friday to Wednesday 08.00 – 13.00, and off on sunday. Better to go in the morning.

  • Online Payment: Some regions allow you to pay the motorcycle or car tax online through official government portals or mobile applications like Samsat Online.

This online payment only works if you pay the tax on time, if your STNK has already expired you need to go to Samsat office.

How to Know the Price of Motorbike or Car tax

The amount of motorcycle or car tax you owe depends on several factors including the type of your motorcycle, engine capacity, and the year of manufacture. To find out the exact tax amount:

  • On the STNK you can find the amount of motorcycle or car tax you need to pay every year.

  • Check Online: Use the official Samsat website or app where you can enter your vehicle’s details to retrieve the tax information. Here is the link to check your tax, in this link you can type your motorcycle or car police number. 

For your information you only can open your tax price in this link if your STNK is still activated, if the STNK has already expired you only can access the price and penalty in the Official Samsat Office.

  • Visit a Samsat Office: You can also get this information by visiting a Samsat office and consulting directly with the staff. You should visit the Samsat office based on your STNK address.

Requirement to Pay Motorcycle or Car Tax in Bali

  • Before you proceed with paying your motorcycle/Car tax or renewing your STNK, ensure you have the following documents:

    1. Original and photocopy of KTP or Passport  with KITAS/KITAP for foreigner (Identity Card of Motorcycle owner)
    2. Original and photocopy of STNK
    3. Original BPKB
    4. Power of attorney if represented

Procedure for Pay Motorcycle or Car Tax

To pay your motorcycle or car tax and renew your STNK, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare all required documents, the staff at Samsat office will ask the original document of the original owner. So if you buy a second hand motorbike you need to obtain the original identity card of the motorcycle or car owner and the power of attorney.

If you don’t have the owner’s identity card, you need to Reverse name of the BPKB and STNK, and It’s one time work including renewing your STNK.

3. Fill the application form, Samsat office will provide.

4. Submit the documents and make the payment. If you are renewing your STNK, you may need to undergo a brief vehicle inspection.

5. Receive the updated STNK and tax payment receipt.
