Foreigners in Indonesia can apply for a driver’s license for both cars and motorbikes, but there are specific requirements and types of licenses they can obtain:
Tourist/Short-term Visitors:
If you’re a tourist or a short-term visitor, you can use an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your valid driver’s license from your home country.
The IDP should be endorsed in the same vehicle class as your home country’s license.
Long-term Visitors/Expats:
For longer stays, you can apply for an Indonesian driver’s license (SIM – Surat Izin Mengemudi).
There are two main types of SIMs: SIM A for cars and SIM C for motorbikes.
To apply for a SIM, you must be at least 17 years old for a motorbike license (SIM C) and 18 for a car license (SIM A).
Test on PC
The application process for a driver’s license typically includes:
Test on PC, which covers road signs, traffic laws, and driving etiquette in Indonesia.
The success rate for foreigners taking the computer-based test with animation is around 30%. There’s no need for prior study, and failing this test isn’t an issue. The test duration is about 20 minutes.
Practical Test
The practical test is not in Bali.
The test center in Bali is said to be the easiest place to get a license in Indonesia, and the fee to get the license is cheaper than JAVA Island.
Therefore, 100 students are waiting at the test center from 8:00 a.m. every day.
About 1-2 hours
A regular driving license (SIM A for cars and SIM C for motorbikes) is typically valid for 5 year
